Launch of Amazon Clinic's Virtual Healthcare Platform for US Clients
- In 32 states, Amazon Clinic will be active.
- Health insurance is not a part of the service.
- The cost of using Amazon Clinic varies depending on the providers.
Tuesday saw the introduction of Amazon Clinic, a digital platform that allows customers to contact with medical professionals to receive treatment for diseases like allergies and skin issues. The business has long aimed to increase its influence in the healthcare industry.
It acquired online pharmacy PillPack in 2018, which served as the foundation for a website it later rebranded as Amazon Pharmacy and used to distribute prescriptions and compare prices for over-the-counter medications.
The e-commerce behemoth announced that its new service, which would connect patients seeking treatment with healthcare professionals, will run in 32 states. The price will vary depending on the providers and the service does not include health insurance, it was emphasised.
Prior to providing services to other businesses under the Amazon Care brand, which it now wants to discontinue by the end of this year, the online retailer initially tested virtual care visits for its own employees in Seattle in 2019.
In order to increase its virtual healthcare presence and add brick-and-mortar doctor's offices for the first time, the firm is also waiting to finalise its $3.49 billion (approximately Rs. 28,200 crore) deal to purchase One Medical. Amazon's stock increased by nearly 1% in pre-bell trading.
Approximately 10,000 employees in corporate and technology roles will be let go by Amazon starting this week, according to a person familiar with the situation. This will be the company's largest layoff to date. The cuts, which the New York Times had previously reported, would affect around 3% of Amazon's corporate personnel. The precise number can change as Amazon businesses evaluate their objectives.
According to the source, the online retailer intends to cut positions in its devices division, which produces 'Alexa' voice-controlled gadgets and home security cameras, as well as in its human resources and retail departments.
